When I was working on the Exalted Second Edition core book, I was handed a list of proposed weapon and armor stats that were supposed to work with the new combat system. I missed the straight/short sword issue, but I noticed there was no wavecleaver. I liked the wavecleaver in 1st edition, so I decided to add it back to the list.
Nowadays, I wish I had instead used it as an opportunity to help a different idea in the game: the idea that Artifacts could get some additional personality from tweaks to them without qualifying them as an entirely new class of weapon or armor.
Given the chance to do it again, I would make the wavecleaver be a reaper daiklave, which is of course the daiklave equivalent of a slashing sword. I would make it a 3 dot Artifact with various bonuses to present it as an improved reaper. An extra Hearthstone setting would remain, but it could also do something like extra damage and Piercing against sea creatures and water elementals. Or maybe just give it the Piercing tag to represent its 1st edition reputed ability to hack through things.
I suppose it could alternately be a very thick short daiklave.
