It was late, and he was far from the sea. Myar flipped his badge over and over in his hand. The Fair Folk had told his brotherhood that the Scarlet Empress was a sham, a glamour induced hallucination of massive proportions. This creature had taken Her voice, Her throne, and Her Realm to launch a campaign of blood and vengeance against the Deathlords. And when this campaign was done...

"... They will kill us all."

There was no one still awake for him to talk to, so he talked to no one. Well, no one was an overstatement. There were plenty of people to talk with, to listen to, and of course there were the various spirits and beasts that would dare to spy upon him. None of these were paying him any attention, and if they could they weren't his type of company anyway.

Myar studied his badge. On its back were three indentions. One was filled in with a mote of black jade. The other two were still open.

"Valor, Conviction, and Will. You want me to pass these three tests to gain some great glory." Again, no one was listening, but he continued. "I stuck the Anathema witch to save my friends. That was Valor. Now all I know is in danger. This is conviction."

Myar finally tired of his badge and put it away.

He needed the answers to three questions now. To deal with the Fair Folk would be suicide, especially at this time of night, alone and without his Brotherhood.

First, who knew that the Empress was a fake? Of course, he knew the answer to this one. Outside of his brotherhood, Mnemon had her suspicions, and V’neef Bijar knew that something was wrong, but neither had firm evidence. His brotherhood knew for sure what was happening.

There was another however. The Fair Folk had told him that the true Empress was imprisoned and that there were people in the Realm who knew where she was. They must also know that this Empress was an imposter. Having this convincing fake on the throne must be staying their hand, however.

Second, how could he solve this problem without triggering a civil war? If Myar were to just slay the Scarlet Vengeance he would be killed in a most brutal, embarrassing, public fashion. His House would be hunted down, and then the Realm would fall into the power vacuum.

Finally, how could he move on this information? Currently he and his Brotherhood were traitors and thousands of miles from civilization. Anyone he told wouldn't believe him, and anyone who did would surely be a danger.

Worse yet, the Wyld had changed him. It had probably changed his friends, too, but he hadn’t yet talked to them about that. Tainted by the Wyld. This alone would make them into outsiders, yet the fate of Creation rested on their shoulders.

He stood, silenced, for a moment. Finally, the ground beneath him dampening with obsidian essence, he spoke, "Speaking, Sesus Denerid Myar. We're stranded in the far southeast and have important information concerning the Empress..." *fade to black*
